Crazy Cake

This recipe is based on "Crazy Mixed-up Chocolate Cake" from A Piece of Cake by Susan G. Purdy, 1989.


  • 3 cups unbleached, all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa, Herhey's Special Dark (Dutch processed) preferred
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons white or cider vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 cups lukewarm water


  1. Heat oven to 350°F/175°C.
  2. (Optional) Sift the dry ingredients together.
  3. Combine all ingredients in a bowl. You can just use the baking pan if you prefer.
  4. Pour into an ungreased 9x13 baking pan.
  5. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Allow to cool slightly before serving. Serve plain or dressed up as desired.


Serves about 12.
